Message from Chihiro

Hello! My name is Chihiro Yamashita and I鈥檓 in third year in the major of African Area Studies at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. I will study at University of Pretoria in South Africa for about a year. I鈥檓 in the faculty of Humanities, and I take classes of Education, Sociology and Criminology. Also I will take the class of local languages in next semester. I have wanted to study in African countries since I entered TUFS, so I鈥檓 glad to study at University of Pretoria actually. For two weeks since I came here, I went to Apartheid Museum, saw wild animals at the Nature reserve, and had parties with international friends. In Pretoria, there are a lot of dangerous areas so I can鈥檛 go to many places easily, but I like warmth of people, unique culture and atmosphere of Pretoria, and I鈥檒l try to learn a lot of things and improve myself a lot. Lastly, thank you for staffs of IAfP, and teachers and staffs of TUFS for supporting me.

Message from Emi

Hello. I鈥檓 Emi Mizuno. I belong to the School of Japan Studies. I will be a senior student from this April.

I will study at the Faculty of Humanities in University of Pretoria from this February to December for two semesters. In this first semester, I will take three modules: Education, Zulu, Setswana. Since my major in Japan is Japanese Language and Japanese Teaching, I would like to compare the language education in Japan and South Africa by learning these modules.

Though only 10 days have passed since I came here in South Africa, I have experienced a lot of new things like watching wild giraffes and zebras and enjoying braai BBQ.

Pretoria is not such a safe city as cities in Japan and it can be dangerous to walk outside alone. But there are strong connections with people. I feel the kindness of my friends.

I would like to express sincere thanks to the staffs of Innovative Africa and teachers supporting my exchange program.

Victoria Falls

I went to Victoria Falls and around the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia. From OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg to the airport around Victoria falls, it takes us about 2 hours. Around Victoria falls, everything was super expensive, people there use USD, so it seems more expensive to me. Of course, restaurants there also was expensive, so we decided to make food ourselves, like sandwiches and pastas. Our travel group was very international, from France, Netherland, Austria, US, and Italy.

One big surprising for me was the name Tanaka was popular among people from Zimbabwe. According to the language as Shona mainly spoken in Zimbabwe, Tanaka means happiness. I met 3 Tanakas for 3 days. Since my name is Tanaka, a lot of people are surprised to know that the name Tanaka is popular in Japan as well. As soon as they know my name is Tanaka, they become more friendly and welcome us with warm heart.

Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is one of the most popular tourists cite in South Africa. It is about 4 hours from Pretoria where I live. I went there with exchange students from other countries. We stayed at southern part of Kruger for 2 nights. Of course, Kruger is too big to go around for 3 days, but we were able to see many animals including all BIG 5, which are lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhinos. These 5 animals are on the bills of South Africa, which are rands.

International Day

I am Naosuke Tanaka studying in UP. I am going to write about an event mainly for exchange students in UP. Every October, there is an event called International Day in UP. The main purpose of International Day is to spread each country鈥檚 culture to South Africans students. In this event, every exchange student performs on the stage or sets stall to show their cultures. This year, exchange students participated from approximately 20 countries. To me, this event seems like GAIGOSAI in TUFS.

In the Japanese stall, people can write their name in Japanese with shuji equipment. It was about 300 students visited the Japanese stall. It was super busy, and everybody enjoyed it.

On the stage, I did kendama performance in front of 500 students.

Unfortunately, I didn鈥檛 get any prize but picture of me is on UP鈥檚 Instagram which made me quite happy. Through this event, I had a great experience that I can鈥檛 do in Japan and I made many friends.
