I am so amazed to share with you my words of gratitude towards Tokyo University of Foreign Studies for the amazing opportunity of exchange program that been so relevant to me in so many different ways, my gratitude goes to African Studies Center for the amazing support that has been given to me and my other colleagues during my stay in Japan; my sincere gratitude goes to all the sponsor for their wonderful support during my life in Japan.
Earlier before leaving Japan, it was in July 2023, the team of Exchange Division Program organized a farewell party for all the international students who successfully enjoyed their stay in Japan; it was an amazing opportunity for me to present a two minutes speech in Japanese. I am also grateful to my Japanese friend Ayumi Kato who was so supportive helping me to proofread the speech attached below:

Life after TUFS

After TUFS, life has been so amazing; despite missing Japan, I am so grateful to have other friends who are Japanese exchange students studying at PIASS. On 30th August,2023, we had good discussion with eight students from TUFS in African Area Studies and PIASS students on a topic concerning the comparison of postwar/post genocide reconstruction in Japan and Rwanda, we shared also on what Japan and Rwanda have in common in building peace and some challenges that they are both facing. We also had calligraphy, writing names in kanji and we had some Japanese craft paper. It was crucial moment that reinforced the relationships between TUFS and PIASS students. We expect for many more joint activities in the near future. Arigatou!

we are PIASS, we are TUFS!

PEACE IS OUR CULTURE!

Amissi Nababuya Christelle

waki

Nababuya Christelle AMISSI

Watashi wa Amissi Nababuya Christelle desu, I am Congolese and a student majoring in peace building and Development in the Department of Peace and conflict Studies at the Protestant Institute of Arts and Social Sciences. The exchange program in general is especially worthwhile in a way when somebody experiences a new culture through educational, social, environmental and cultural exchange, we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and those around us. In fact, the collaboration between Protestant Institute of Arts and Social Sciences and Tokyo university of Foreign Studies have made possible the dream of many students to study in Japan. Being in Japan is such an amazing experience that we don鈥檛 only gain from the academic perspective but also from the cultural and social perspectives.

A path to amazing future

Life is just meaningless without inspiration, my heart full of gratitude is beyond measure. From a far place to a new home, it has been exceptional to be in Japan. For the first day we met these amazing people who clearly made a step to promising us that a bright future is ensured. This same day, I felt encouraged and really motivated. Thank you, African Studies Centre (ASC) and IAfP for the warm welcoming time.

Impression and challenges

Being in a different culture represents both opportunities and also some challenges as well. My first 2 months were not so enjoyable, due to weather, the language, and also learning on how to adjust in an international community. On the other hand, the train system was a bit challenging to me as a result of getting lost sometimes. After my arrival in Japan, winter season started and overcoming the cold was a bit challenging for me, not only that during summer time, the hotness could be challenging sometimes. I just realized that Japan is either hotter or colder than I thought before. But after all, the stay during fall, winter, and summer time was really amazing.

Academic benefits

Firstly, in other to overcome these challenges, I took Japanese class that was done five times in a week in a hybrid manner (online and in person) in the fall semester, we also had a winter course with Japanese Students and PIASS students hosted by Professor Sinishi Takeuchi and Professor Kazuyuki Sasaki. I also attended an intercultural collaborative learning program with students from Osaka University(online) in the spring semester. Secondly, I also joined LET’S, a club at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies that helps to improve the Language proficiency. We had quite good discussions with Japanese students in the club that want to improve their English skills and also International Students that were eager to improve their Japanese skills. I also learned interesting Japanese calligraphy that was so much helpful to read different words and to connect through the communication way. Attending Japanese class was very important, because at the end of the first level I was able to make a presentation about my home country in Japanese language and also have a smooth conversation with others. Moreover, the film analysis class was an interesting class for me because we created a scene related to peace and the connecting way of so many students in the international community. There were so many interesting courses, and I really learned a lot from our different professors and my colleagues. As a result, on the 3rd month in Japan, I realized that a lot of things got improved thanks to different seniors who willingly cooperated with us to make our stay more enjoyable and as well the different clubs I joined that helped to improve my skills. I attended the online session about the Hiroshima Tour that was so useful to further my understanding about peace.

Social and cultural benefits

I am so grateful to have improved my intercultural communication skills. I also better understand society from a religious perspective by attending some festivals (Kurayami Matsuri, Gaigosai…) that helped to integrate into Japanese society better and easily. In addition, coming to Japan has also helped me to meet some Japanese students who studied in Rwanda. In addition, eating different types of Japanese foods was an amazing experience for me; I ate different types of foods such as ramen, sushi, okonomiyaki, takoyaki, karaage, tonkatsu, ochyazuke, shabu-shabu but my favorite remains okonomiyaki and ramen.
I also visited different places, especially climbing the mount Takao with my Zambian colleagues, which was an amazing experience for me. We also had lunch and dinner sessions with students from different backgrounds including our Japanese colleagues that helped us to bond together. In addition, TUFS International Student Support Association also played a big role by organizing some cultural activities such as Kimono Party, Kamakura visit, etc. which helped not only me but many students to integrate into the Society.

I am a young lady interested in activities related to peace. I joined VOLAS, a volunteer group where I had an opportunity to have a cultural event with Japanese students where I presented about my country and its culture. In so many different ways, I gained the social and cultural skills which are not only beneficial for me but also to the society as well. I was glad to also share my experience with CCAJ (Connecting Children of Africa and Japan) which is a community-based group with members who meet most of the time in order to improve their English skills and also to discuss global issues. I was so impressed by the members’ courage to really learn and improve their skills.

The time spent with these amazing people was so meaningful to see how possible development is when we cooperate and involve young people in the process. Both children in Japan and Africa are actors of promoting a better future with their full participation in the global issues that affect the lives of many. With them I strongly learn that Togetherness is a powerful means to make impactful changes in the society.

Personal achievement

I was given the opportunity to do my internship at Japan Volunteer Center which contributed continuously to my personal growth. I also attended some seminars organized by Sasakawa Peace Foundation (online and in person) and as well the one organized by ASC.

Appreciation

Japan has been an amazing home to me. I so much appreciate the Japanese values such as politeness and kindness, and I am so much thrilled to talk about the amazing experience I had in Japan once being home. I am also grateful to my home University (PIASS) and TUFS Exchange division Office, to JASSO , to Yazaki cooperation, the crowdfunding contributors, to ASC and IAfP for having made my stay more enjoyable and full of wonderful memories. I am grateful to everyone who made me feel at home.

The world is more amazing to have people like you who are ready to shape the lives of many.

Thank you.

waki

Themba MAPULANGA
My Exchange Experience at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

As a student hailing from the University of Zambia, embarking on an exchange program at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) was a significant milestone in my academic journey. Japan鈥檚 vibrant culture and prestigious academic environment beckoned me, promising a transformative experience. In this report, I鈥檒l share the highlights of my 10 months stay.

Annet and I posing in front of the TUFS monument on our first day at TUFS (2022).

Stepping foot onto the vibrant campus of TUFS marked the beginning of a transformative journey. Over the course of 10 months, I had the privilege of forging friendships with individuals from diverse nationalities, fostering cross-cultural friendships and enhancing my understanding of global cultures. Through these interactions, I gained valuable insights into different cultural practices and traditions, enriching my intercultural competence.
Settling down at TUFS wasn鈥檛 challenging as I had many people to help with ensuring that I had settled in smoothly. Dr.Chihiro and Yuko San from the IAfP office were ever helpful as they helped us with various processes regarding our stay. My study buddy from the university鈥檚 buddy program also helped ensure that I settled in well at TUFS. The other African exchange students (Jato, Paul and Kajad) who had already spent a semester at TUFS also helped us settle in by showing us around. Yazaki Cooperation also assisted us by sponsoring us with some funds that helped us in our early months at The University.

Posing with my bicycle which was given to me by the IAfP office for use during my time at TUFS (2022).

One of the defining highlights of my exchange experience was delving into the essence of Japanese tradition through the art of Kendo. Joining the school’s Kendo team was more than just a physical pursuit; it was a journey of self-discipline, honor, and respect. My club mates and The Sensei at the dojo were very welcoming and they ensured that I settled in very well with the team and didn鈥檛 feel out of place.

Me in my Kendo attire at the TUFS Martial Arts Dojo (2023)

One of the most interesting experiences was attending the Kurayami Festival. This event celebrated Japanese traditions and folklore with music, dance, and beautiful street lights and decorations. I got to experience the vibrant atmosphere and learn more about Japanese culture. Meeting other locals helped me understand the importance of community and spirituality in Japan. The festival left a lasting impression on me, making me appreciate different cultures and the connections we can make through shared experiences.

Posing with other exchange students at the Kurayami Festival (2023)

Academically, my experience at TUFS was equally fulfilling. I had the privilege of attending engaging classes and lectures, where I gained profound insights into various disciplines. It was quite interesting to operate in an academic environment that has different systems from my home university. This also provided me with practical lessons with regards certain things that can also be replicated in the systems at my home university. Additionally, I spent my time outside class learning about the various administrative and public systems in Japan. As a Development Studies major, I had a plan to utilize my time in Japan learning about Japan’s development path and various administrative and public service systems in Japan. Learning how the Japanese public transport systems work for example provided me with valuable information on some of the lessons my home country can pick up.
Furthermore, my involvement in the intercultural learning class, led by Fukushima University was a significant highlight in my academic experience. To sum up my intercultural learning class at Fukushima University, I visited Fukushima for the 10th Anniversary of the Sakura Project. My friends and I participated in the project by making PR videos promoting the project. One of my favorite moments during this trip was receiving the Chief Award from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism which was presented to us by the Director of the Tohoku Regional Development Bureau as recognition for our participation in the project. Receiving this award underscored the importance of fostering international collaborations and promoting cultural understanding.

Receiving the Chief Award at the 10th Anniversary of The Fukushima Sakura Project (2023)

Planting Sakura trees along the highway as part of the Sakura Project (2023).

My exploration of Japan extended beyond the confines of the university, as I ventured into the vibrant streets of Tokyo and neighboring prefectures. REPORT ON MY STUDY IN JAPAN AT TOKYO UNIVERSITY OF FOREIGN STUDIES.

Annet BANDA
THE UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA
STAY PERIOD AT TUFS: OCTOBER 2022 to JULY 2023

My name is Annet Banda, a Zambian studying at the University of Zambia. I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Development studies with Sociology. From October 2022 to July 2023, I stayed in Japan and was an exchange student for that period. My experience living in Japan was amazing and I would like to share my experience here.
First of all, after arriving in Japan, I was slightly scared of how I would fit in due to reasons such as language barrier mainly but my experience turned out different. I found very accommodating people that helped me settle in upon my arrival and then I proceeded to begin my registration process with a lot of help from the Student Exchange Division office at TUFS as well as a lot of help from Dr.Chihiro and Ms.Yuko from IAfP Office. They helped me in settling for the right courses and part of my highlight during registration is that I took the Japanese language class. This was a very huge step for me and I was very excited to begin learning Japanese formally for the first time in my life.

(Fig. 1) On my second day in Japan with Themba and Dr. Chihiro who helped us open bank accounts and to do other paper work.

(Fig.2) Me on the left side with a white coat with my Japanese language classmates.

My experience generally with classes was great. I also had an opportunity to learn courses from Fukushima and Tohoku University which widened my cultural exchange opportunity. I would like to highlight here about how interactive my classes were during my study at TUFS, I had an opportunity to interact with people from different countries around the world which helped me to have different views about different things. Outside class, I had an opportunity to experience the Japanese culture on a bigger level. I visited various places including temples, zoos and other sites such as the Tokyo tower and sky tree. I also tried so many different foods such as yakiniku, gyoza, ramen and sushi but to mention a few. I also attended some festivals such as the fireworks festival and the Kurayami Festival where I was supposed to wear a special gown called a 鈥楬appi鈥? This festival was very interesting and I had a lot of fun.

(Fig. 3) Me in the center with other exchange students attending the Kurayami festival.

(Fig. 4) Me visiting a temple.

Furthermore, I visited Takao Mountain and I was able to hike to the top with my friends for the first time in my life. This was however a great experience. Finally, Japan is a very interesting country and I am more than grateful to have participated in the exchange programme because I learnt so many things both in class and outside class. I was able to learn basic aspects of the Japanese language, I was able to interact with people from around the world and I was also able to participate in various activities that impacted me and will certainly help me in the years to come. In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to Tokyo University of Foreign Studies for the great opportunity to study in Japan, the IAfP Office and the African Studies Center for the never ending support and help rendered to me from the first day I arrived to the last day I spent in Japan. Finally, I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to Yazaki Cooperation for the financial support rendered to me at the time of my arrival in Japan as it helped me settle in well, as well as some expenses. I hope to someday visit Japan again but for now I will treasure the memories and everything I learnt and also spread my experience with others in Zambia. THANK YOU!

Our colleague Jato and Paul; former exchange students came to pick us from the Tokyo鈥檚 Haneda international airport to the campus where we get to meet in-person the staff of the Inter-University Exchange Project (Africa)-TUFS who are Dr. Chihiro Kumashiro and Yuko Nishiwaki whom we mostly communicated regularly online in the entire successfulness procedures and arrangements that of this trip.

From Rwanda [developing country] to Japan [developed country] had been with full of excitement to explore everything in numerous fields which includes Japanese development, environment, culture and the society.

My First time abroad. Being to Japan brought to me a wide experience not only of how I understand Japan as a country but also its spheres of life and the broad topics on global arena. In line with this, this report provides overview of the points in regard to the experiences of my stay in Japan from September, 2022 to July, 2023. It covers various aspects such as school life, culture experiences, sites of attractions, impressions and my observations.

Presentation on Women empowerment-Experience of Rwanda-@Tufs,2023

In the experience of school life at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, I took part in several courses that discussed broad topics of gender in comparative perspectives. Basically, this is the area that I am interested in and had a broader understanding derived from my country`s efforts to gender equality and the women engagement in all dimensions of the nation-building. With my observation, TUFS classes which are multi-fields related provides with students a good platform to share ideas, experiences and skills on critical issues that do affects global path to sustainable development. Here in this picture, I was invited to a feminism course class while sharing the strategies on what Rwanda has done and doing in the gender equality promotion of recent decades where I got a deep knowhow of the applicability of this in the distinct parts of the world from fellow course participants who are from various backgrounds.

Cultural Experiences

KIMONO DRESS

CALLIGRAPHY

During my stay in Japan, among a lot of joyful moments, I got chances to participate in the cultural experiences organized by the Student Exchange Division of TUFS. It is an environmental friendly to convenient lifestyle and the delicious okonomiyaki鈥檚 farm-side. This is Japan and I am Patrick Muhirwa from Rwanda nicknamed 鈥渁 country of a thousand hills鈥? and a student of the Peace and Conflict Studies department. From Protestant Institute of Arts and Social Sciences [PIASS] in Rwanda all along to the prominent Tokyo University of Foreign Studies [TUFS] has been a value adding experience to both academic and professional settings of my life to which I learned, excelled, and grown.

Why Japan?

Deep interests have driven my selection to study abroad in Japan and basically at TUFS. In fact, joining PIASS which already been in partnership with TUFS has put me in good position to learn more stories about Japan especially from the joint online events organized by the Inter-University Exchange project (Africa)-TUFS that often times took place and also interaction points with the Japanese students who stayed in Rwanda for their academic exchange programs.

My curiosity since then grownup in areas of Japanese History, culture, and development because by looking to the transition journey of Japan from the very tragic past of wars and the experienced bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to the present incredible economic and technological progress, I thought that onsite learning would be more rewarding and beneficial in terms of getting first-hand knowledge that provides takeaways to contextualize in my country [Rwanda] which is also on its path to recovery and reconstruction after the 1994 Genocide.

School Life

Following my days-long trip from Rwanda to Japan; I did the fall semester registration in several departments of the school under the special guide meant for exchange students which is an English-mode provided by the student exchange division of TUFS. I have then enrolled to the classes relevant enough to connect my interests such as the social movements and democracy in Japan, post-war Japan foreign relations, topics in Japanese films, Japan鈥檚 politics and economy, global development and local society, international organizations and the sustainable development plus the helpful Japanese language [Integrated Japanese language program] which supported my daily interactions and research life in Japan.

In addition, I have been in conducive environment to participate and engage in various seminars organized at the TUFS and especially the consistent events of the African Studies Center (ASC-TUFS) where from a group of experts visiting the university and the center in particular gained crucial knowledge and skills for transformational mindset, plus also increase of my active role in the next research and career adventures of life. As most of these seminars focused on success stories, issues and effective solutions on African continent context of development and Peace was value adding exposure to my daily course work in the field of peace-building and development. Examples of some research seminars I participated in includes: The Indigenous Knowledge of People on Nature with Case Study of Ethiopia, The Africa鈥檚 Industrialization with Focus on Triggers and Enablers in Distinct Time Periods, Forced Migration and Refugee Issues in the Great-lakes Region among Others. Besides, I participated in sessions of international organizations who partners with TUFS in research, trainings and capacity building areas. These organizations present their intervention points and approaches across the world to the university students who are aspiring to take careers in similar fields of work. For Example; the recently was the International Organization for Migration (IOM) experts who works on the frontline in Ukraine with their colleagues in Tokyo visited the school and presented to us their intervention mechanisms connected to peace processes that the organization undertakes in areas like humanitarian responses and emergency management and the efforts to facilitate reconstructions.

Study Trips

Learning has not been a single way process in my case but rather as wide as both schooling and non-schooling fashioned. Luckily, I have had chances to travel in several parts of Japan such as Niigata, Hiroshima, Osaka, Chiba, Kanagawa and Tokyo in which lifetime memories and several forms of benefits were earned.

Bonds With a City for Peace

Visiting Hiroshima Memorial Museum with group of people across the world /Academy

This is the first city on the planet that was attacked by an atomic bomb [Hiroshima], and now has been nicknamed a city for peace, with its unique efforts towards the global peace and security given its relevant initiatives. I have had an opportunity to visit this city and stayed for a week long at the Hiroshima Peace Park hotel during one of the prefectural programs entitled 鈥淗iroshima-ICAN academy for Nuclear Weapons and Global Security鈥? Alongside other peace advocates from across the globe; basically from 20 countries have acquired skills for nuclear disarmament through learning both from the survivors [Hibakusha] experiences, field experts and visited the Hiroshima Memorial Museum that outlines all of what happened. With this, I got to know the facts of nuclear bombs and realized once again how important is peace and the long-lasting consequences of violence or inhumane acts.

2023 G7 Youth Summit Delegate/ Hiroshima

I was also pleased to be among peace delegates to the global youth summit of the seven rich countries known as 鈥淕7鈥 hosted by Japan this year in Hiroshima. It aimed at fostering disarmament and global network of trust for peace. In this unique conference that convened about 50 peace advocates from across the world with majority from these states, I got to expand my skill-set on issues of global security, inhumane and humanitarian aspects of the nuclear bombings and the politics around this issue. Through research presentations, workshops, focused group discussions and the sessions with Hibakushas gained a wide perspective and package to answer why urgent disarmament is, especially the nuclear disarmament in consideration of the emerging wars both intra-states and inter-states all around the world today. The strong and encouraging have been the end, where we together produced set of recommendations to the leaders of these states which are mostly the ones [Countries] to host, rely and produce nuclear weapons who have met in the same place immediately afterwards.

International Friendships,

Being in Japan this time had not only offered me the diversified environment to live but also, its working sentiments embedded with practical engagements. Opportunistically have been invited to participate in two programs that aims 鈥淚nternational friendships and cooperation鈥 among which one was the International friendly run organized by the Japanese NPO called Active Middle International Association [AMIA] in collaboration with foreign embassies in Japan and the other one focused on Japanese Budo culture organized by the Nippon Budokan Training Center in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. From both, I was exposed to vast experiences especially in aspects of inter-cultural communications, inter-group relations and the skill-set of international cooperation.

How is Like Starting a new Year in Japan

I was very much curious to know how it looks like starting a new year in Japan because the first day of the year seems to be more ceremonial to many people in Rwanda. I realized this by being hosted in the family of my Japanese friend called [Rei san] who stayed in Rwanda as an exchange student and joined them on a new year seasonal trip to NIIGATA, the snow world. I had never seen snow before, that was my first time seeing it with my eyes. On the way, I could see in most places this particular decoration in the picture which is the Japanese best decoration of the new year as they explained to me.聽 We had enjoyed immensely together and to me in particular experienced a lot, including testing different kinds of dishes, speaking little Japanese which was somehow fun because of the struggling kind of pronunciation but a good space for practicing the little I knew. It was really nice making such interactions with the family.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

I knew kimono a long time ago but as a word, it was an amazing moment during the cultural experience organized by the Student Exchange Division of TUFS where I saw the fashion and dressed up in this style for the first time. This was a special occasion provided by the International Student Support Association of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS-ISSA) in collaboration with the Student Exchange Division at TUFS for the international students to experience the Japanese cultural practices which included Kimono dressing, flower arrangements, drawing calligraphy, playing Kendama among others which I really enjoyed much.

鈥淢urakoze鈥? a Kinyarwanda word that mean 鈥淭hank you so much鈥 and 鈥溿亗銈娿亴銇ㄣ亞銇斻仏銇勩伨銇椼仧銆侷n Japanese, is only the song I have for all people who made my stay in Japan so colorful and value adding. I am so grateful to have come to Japan… I am glad because I spent 10 months learning not only in the academic perspective but also in the social and cultural perspective. The most beautiful part is the experience I had during fall, winter, spring and summer; which is totally different to the dry and rain season in my home country. An amazing and unforgettable moment spent in Japan, my pleasure is to express my gratitude to everyone who participated massively to make me feel loved and supported.

The season has finally come, the amazing September to November!
Let us enjoy the season of crops and harvest, a moment to remember.
The season that hosts celebrations, the preparation for joy and peace,
Remember determination and hardworking are helpful for greatness;
But what are we really harvesting? The joy comes always in the morning!
Remember what you reap what you sow. Does this have any warning to us?
Well, Autumn reminds us that we should not give up but being determined!
Celebration always comes after a huge sacrifice given and really appreciated.
Autumn said it might seem hard and sometimes confusing but never give up.
It is time to prove our determination, it is our time to shine and being focused.

The heavy snow that defines the beauty of nature
The freezing temperatures that bring wind chill
The cold that is extremely acknowledged by many;
The season of great thinking and powerful ideas,
Calming the soul and make the goals happened;
The season of the future and the early great vision
Winter is an alarm not to get distracted or
To get disturbed by the cold but to learn,
The shape of the future starts today not tomorrow!
winter is really a great alarm.
The cold can challenge sometimes but
It is beneficial and really amazing!
Winter, a powerful alarm and
A sign to remain strong and joyful.

Hope has finally taken the soul
The smell of flowers appreciated;
The impossible has no meaning again,
hope has been revived, happiness,
has found its comfortable zone;
Spring comes to install peace and joy,
Spring brings the true hope needed;
The season of a beautiful nature and,
It is the amazing Sakura and festivals!
March to May, the true meaning of hope.

Hello Summer, an amazing season!
Excessive warm weather makes it
More interesting and enjoyable.
Hello June, July and warm August
The beaches are so refreshing and
Bring relaxation!
